It has been said by MCR frontman Gerard Way that the band is not emo.  In order to confirm or deny this, we must first understand the definition of the word ‘emo’ as a music subgenre, not a culture or lifestyle.  Wikipedia defines the word ‘emo’ as ’a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics.’  If we are to take this definition at face value and apply it to My Chemical Romance, then the answer would be: yes, the band is emo.  But it never seems to be that simple.  There are blogs upon comments upon sites dedicated to analyzing and promoting this style.  Harsh comments calling emo kids f*gs and p*ssies seem to never fail.  Most emo songs talk about self-harm and suicide. THIS IS NOT WHAT MCR IS ABOUT.  They have spoken out several times about their anti-suicide views and it’s apparent in their music.  If this is emo, then MCR is not.

 I hope most of you see the confusion on the topic.  We will never know who is emo or what is emo.  All we can know is what people label themselves as, and if MCR says they’re not emo, then they should know better than anyone else.
